I was debating on this one or the velcro band. I ended up purchasing this one cause I might get bad rash with the velcro one. Got a pair of these.

Depend on people but I do need to use knee pad. During practice, we kneel down a lot and my knee gets bruised easily. Having a pad on will help a lot!
